There was an operation they called "El Carreño", "The Sweep", because they were going to sweep away anything they found. They would hit you as if they were cutting the grass with a machete. After that operation, I remember my dad telling my mom, “Look”. My dad was wounded too. He was on crutches.

“I think you better go and take refuge in the camps in Honduras, otherwise they will kill the entire family,” he said.

“You should go take refuge there, and if they kill me it will only be me. At least let’s save the children.”

My mom had to flee to Honduras, because there was an amnesty that allowed people who fled through here to go to refugee camps there.
