It was in the Guinda de Mayo that I lost my husband. I had already lost a son and I lost another boy there. He died because there was no food. Because the Guinda de Mayo happened, we had nothing, nothing to eat, and he starved to death. We didn’t even have sugar to make him sugarwater. And I tried to breastfeed him, but I got malaria so I didn’t have any milk. That’s why I couldn’t breastfeed him, even though I got more breastmilk later when we were up in the mountains. Many children died up there, because we’d cover their mouths so that soldiers wouldn’t find us because of the noise. I was able to breastfeed once we reached the base again. But he had died of hunger because I was sick.
